Party Season Hair How To

The party season calls for elegant hairstyles that can take us from day to night in an instant. The elegant chignon is gorgeous paired with your evening wear, or if you’re looking for something more pared down, the twisted half braid will be your go-to.

Our Beauty team have created two hair how-to guides that’ll see you rocking enviable hair in just five-minutes.

Twisted Half-Braid

Fun, flirty and easy-to-do, the twisted half-braid is great for cocktail parties. If you have wavy hair, this is the perfect festive style for a quick glam-up!

Prep

Ensure you start with semi wavy hair. If you have lost your wavy texture during the day, simply spritz on some sea salt spray and let your hair dry. We used the John Frieda Haircare Beach Blonde Sea Salt Spray Ocean Waves, 150ml, $22.99 and Argania Perfect Texture Spray, 250ml, $24.99 to create texture.

Split

Starting on one side at the top of the head, split a small section of hair into two even halves.

Twist

Like you would create a French braid, add a new piece to the section of hair to create the twist. Continue creating your twist by taking another piece from below. Combine that piece to the twist as shown.

Repeat the previous steps and continue twisting until you get to the halfway point near the crown. Once you have reached the back, simply complete the twist and secure your hair with an elastic hair tie. Repeat on the other side.

Combine

Lightly tug the loops of the braids outward to make them fatter. Cross-over the two twisted braids and use one part to weave through a loop in the other part. This will create a flatter, more secure cross-over.

Secure

Secure the cross section with bobby pins. Remember to match your bobby pins to your hair colour. We used the Mita Contour Bobby Pins, 80-Pack, $6.99. Untie the ends and tousle into your loose hair. To finish, give your hair a good spritz of Lee Stafford Hold Tight Hairspray, 250ml, $12.99. Finally, brush your loose waves with the Mita Deluxe Styling Brush, Medium, $26.99, and voila! You’re good to go!

Chic Chignon

This chic chignon has to be one of the most impressive hairstyles for a formal event. The good news is that it is also quick and easy to do!

Prep

This hairstyle works great with un-shampooed hair! However, make sure you spray on some dry shampoo for a quick lift before you start prepping for your chignon. We prepped our talent’s hair with the Lee Stafford Dry Shampoo, 150ml, $15.99.

Tie

Tie your hair into a low pony at the base of your neck using a snag free elastic band. The Mita Snag Free Elastics are suitable for all hair types and are great for every day styling.

Part

Create a little centre parting above the elastic. Make sure you separate the hair all the way through. Pull the centre apart slightly to create a wider gap. If your pony feels slightly loose at this stage don’t worry, things will tighten up once you tuck the hair through the gap.

Tuck

Now, simply tuck your ponytail through the centre parting overtop. At this stage, it would be beneficial to ensure that the front also looks good as things get even tighter from here on.

Roll

Continue to roll and tuck the remaining ponytail through the parting until you have a stunning chignon. Secure any loose bits with Mita Contour Bobby Pins, 80-Pack, $6.99. Finish your chignon with the John Frieda Haircare Frizz Ease Moisture Barrier Hair Spray, $22.99 to prevent any sneaky frizz.
