A first bra is often a milestone moment in any girl’s (and parents’!) life. From deciding when it’s the right time, to what style of bra she needs and getting the right fit, there are many things to consider. Buying her first bra can be an emotional time for both your daughter and yourself, and we want to help make the experience as smooth and easy as possible. Check out our tips on buying her first bra.
Is she ready for a bra?
Knowing when your daughter is ready for a bra is the first step. Girls develop at different times, so there’s no set age for when she needs to start wearing a bra.
Physical development in the chest area is the most obvious sign. However you also need to take emotional development into consideration. While she may not be physically ready, if she’s asking for one, it’s probably the right time.
What are her options?
Once she’s ready, the next step is finding the right type of bra for her. We have a variety of different styles to suit your girl, dependent on support desired, comfort level and preference.
Crop Tops are a great introduction as they can help her get used to the feeling of wearing a bra. Lightweight, wirefree, and comfy they are also perfect for girls who are not quite ready for moulded cups.
Wirefree with light contour padding, Soft-Cup bras are another option. We love Miss Honey Vegas which range both basic coloured bras – which are perfect under school shirts, as well as styles with cute and quirky prints – for something a little more fun!
For physical activity it’s important she gets proper support. With a great shape and a comfortable fit Berlei’s Youth Sports Bra will provide her with a moderate level of support.
No matter which bra style she chooses, make sure she’s comfortable, and it fits correctly.
Finding the right fit
To ensure she’s feeling comfortable and confident it’s important to get a proper bra fitting.
Trust Farmers to get the perfect fit; we offer a free in-store bra fitting service, where our trained consultants will help her find the right bra.
Not all girls will be comfortable getting an instore bra fitting done, for some it can be an uncomfortable experience. While we encourage women to be fitted in person you can also use our online bra calculator to help find her size.
The shape and size of her bust will change over time, so it’s important that she gets regularly fitted. Check out our Bra Fit Checklist for tips on finding the perfect fit.
